Patten

Michael Patten was born in Achill in 1942. He worked for many years as a deep sea fisherman all around the Irish coast.

Most of the images in this series are derived from a sketchbook kept by Michael during his time at sea. The drawings of boats, seascapes and fishing gear are whimsical and naïve in style.

The simple drawings have been brought to life through the use of colour, added through a multi-plate printmaking process by his daughter Caroline who works as a printmaker.

'Making simple sketches has always been my way of recounting life at sea and all the joy and despair that comes with it. They help me recall the everyday grind of casting and hauling gear, moments of spectacular beauty, friendship and camaraderie, hair-raising encounters and near misses.'
