Sean McSweeney

Born in Dublin, Seán McSweeney (1935-2018) is a self-taught artist. From 1965 he began to exhibit regularly in the Dawson Gallery, Dublin and in 1967, he married, left Dublin and moved to Wicklow. He was elected a member of Aosdána in 1984, the same year he moved with his family to his mother’s birthplace of Ballyconnell in Co. Sligo where he lived up until his death recently.

Major retrospective exhibitions include; Retrospective 1965—1990 at the Galway Arts Festival and RHA Gallagher Gallery, Dublin in 1990 and Seán McSweeney—Retrospective in the Model Arts and Niland Gallery, Sligo, the Triskel Arts Centre, Cork and the Solstice Arts Centre, Navan in 2007. He represented Ireland abroad on many occasions including the Sense of Ireland Festival, London in 1980 and the 1985 Festival of Painting at Cagnes-sur-Mer, France.

His work can be found in many public collections such as Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane; Trinity College, Dublin; Sligo Museum & Art Gallery; Ulster Museum and Dublin City University.
